Useful Information

Starting a new aquarium or pond

  1. During the first four weeks this aquarium or pond will go through a very toxic cycle, which is known as a nitrate cycle (new pond syndrome). This condition is extremely toxic to fish during this time, and care should be taken not to introduce big numbers of livestock to start the bio logical bacteria. We recommend that you lower the Ph of your water to a Ph of 7. This will reduce the toxicity of the nitrate.

  2. Use a bacteria developing agent such as CYCLE, ACTIVE-BAC, NITRIVET. These preparations are designed to give your aquarium/pond a helping hand to generate the required bacteria to get you going faster.

  3. Only introduce a small number of livestock to your aquarium initially and DO NOT INTRODUCE ANY MORE until the nitrate cycle is over (1) month. If you introduce livestock during the cycle this will kill the new stock as they are being introduced to an extremely toxic condition.

  4. Do not change the water during this period but maintain your Ph during this period by using Ph DOWN or UP, feed small quantities of food one feed a day as excess fool will accelerate the nitrate condition and cause high mortality.

  5. After the cycle is over start a routine of feeding twice a day and a water change of at least 25% each week for aquariums and 25% once a month for large garden ponds. This will keep your fish in good health. If you do not carry out this practice you will run into big problems as your filter, no matter how good it is, will build up to a stage that your water will become extremely acid and will burn your fish causing fungus.

  6. Tips when cleaning filters. Clean them with aquarium of pond water as this will retain living bacteria. If you use tap water the chlorine will destroy the living bacteria which is maintaining a healthy aquarium/pond. Always use the WATER AGER when replacing water so the chlorine is eliminated and will not harm aquarium/pond bacteria.

  7. A clean aquarium is a healthy aquarium. When you drain off the 25% of water, us a gravel siphon which will keep your gravel clean.

  8. Introducing the fish to an aquarium/pond. Float fish in theplastic bag they come in for 30 minutes then op the bag and add 1 cup of water each 5 minutes for 5 times. This will condition fish to the water they are being introduced into.

  9. MAKE SURE THE AQUARIUM OR POND WATER IS A SIMILAR Ph TO THE WATER IN THE BAG AS A BIG CHANGE WILL MAKE THE NEW FISH EXTREMELY STRESSED AND COULD KILL THEM.

The above advice is also applicable if you totally clean your aquarium/pond.
